Truck Stop
Driving fast on Route 62 out of Twentynine Palms through shocking yellow and blue — somewhere along the California/Arizona border there’s a fantastic military truck and I hit the brakes and slide into a dusty lot with a couple of sleeping bulldozers, some tumbleweed and scrub, and not much else. I snap a few photographs, disappointed that I can’t capture the majesty of this beautiful machine shining in the middle of all this empty desert.
A serious black SUV crunches into the lot, spraying gravel and covering me in dust. The tinted window lowers and a thick old man with a brush cut, black suit and black sunglasses nods at me.
“Afternoon,” he says with a sharp wave.
“Afternoon.”
“What are we doing here today?”
“Just taking a picture of that great truck.”
He glances over at it, then stares hard at me. “Damn it, you goddamned freaks — just get the hell out off this land before I make a call.” The tinted window comes up and he spins the Land Rover around and watches me until I leave.
